As I savored my cup of coffee at the Black Coffee Roasting Company in Missoula, I couldn’t help but admire the unique charm of the cityscape outside. A bit tranquil on a Saturday morning, yet last night, it was a bustling scene with standing-room-only at various restaurants and bars.
Engaging with the locals, I love hearing their perspectives on community vitality. Downtown Missoula truly transforms into a destination as the sun sets, with vibrant street crossings, lively groups, and a palpable energy. 
But, my curiosity extends beyond the nightlife. What about the shops? Are they thriving? Growing? My recent visits left me pondering these questions. While foot traffic was notable, I discovered that appearances can be deceiving. Conversations with shop owners revealed a fascinating trend – a blend of local presence and thriving online sales. 
Some shop owners emphasized the importance of having a physical storefront to express their local pride, even if online orders fuel their success. It’s a testament to adapting to changing times and evolving business models. 
As I reflect on my time in Missoula, it sparks a parallel curiosity about my home community, Great Falls. Recently, I’ve heard a similar narrative – the shift to online sales and innovative order methods, a silver lining from the challenges posed by COVID. 
These insights remind us that a thriving community is not always apparent at first glance. Behind quiet streets, there may be a buzzing online marketplace and a resilient spirit.
